Like the back of a Dragon that had been temporarily asleep by São Jorge, its exuberant and elongated shape is presented from afar, with its mountains reminiscent of that draconian air. Being essentially plateau, it shows the volcanic cones that generated the island and that gave way to steep slopes that plunge into the deep blue ocean or that simply end in small flat areas at sea level, the so famous Fajãs de São Jorge.
Fertile soils and a favorable microclimate captivate the inhabitants for the permanent cultivation in these fajãs – some of them difficult to access – silent and isolated from the world but paradoxically calm, peacefull and with no sense of time. With more than 70 fajãs on the island, its the natural beauty, isolation, and tranquility that have dominated part of the island’s history and offer extraordinary and unique panoramas.
The different shades of green of the forests, endemic vegetation and pastures, the brown of the farmlands, the black volcanic basalt to the blue of the delicate but majestic sea give color to the natural picture of the island, making it untouchable and intact and despite the relatively small area, the extensive coastline resulting from the elongated shape of São Jorge – like the back of a dragon – invites to the vast stunning of places and scenic scenery.
